Accessible Bathroom Planning Guide: Start With the Person, Then the Products

An accessible bathroom should start with the person who will use it, not with a catalogue of products. Rails, seats, higher toilets and walk-in showers can all help, but only when they solve the right problem for the right person.

An occupational therapist can help match the room to the person; plumbers, electricians and accessible bathroom installers make sure the work is safe and suitable.

1. Start with the user, not the room

The most important design input is the person using the bathroom. Ask what they find difficult now, what makes them feel unsafe, what they avoid doing, and what style they actually want to live with. Accessibility should support independence without stripping away taste or personality.

2. Map the daily tasks

Walk through the routine as separate tasks: entering the room, using the toilet, washing, showering or bathing, drying, dressing, reaching towels, cleaning and storage. For each task, note whether the issue is balance, reach, grip, pain, fatigue, sight, memory, hearing, wheelchair movement, transfers, anxiety or needing a carer nearby.

3. Design around different needs

A wheelchair user may need turning space, transfer space and knee clearance under a basin. Someone with low sight may need stronger contrast and fewer surprise obstacles. A blind user may prefer a predictable layout where key fittings are easy to locate by touch. Someone with chronic fatigue may need seated options, reachable storage and controls that reduce effort.

4. Leave space where space matters

Clear floor area can make the difference between a room that technically fits and a room that is usable. Think about door swing, transfer space beside the toilet, shower entry, towel reach and whether another person needs to assist.

5. Choose products after the needs are clear

Lever taps, wall-hung basins, fold-down seats, grab rails and higher toilets all have a place, but none are automatically right. A higher toilet can help one person and make transfers harder for another. A grab rail only helps if it is in the right position and fixed into suitable structure.

  • Has the main user described what they find difficult?
  • Have style preferences been discussed?
  • Is there enough space for movement or assistance?
  • Are contrast, lighting and trip hazards considered?
  • Are rails and seats planned around structure?

HIP principle

Accessible does not have to mean clinical. Contrast, rails, lighting, seating and storage can all look intentional when they are part of the design from the beginning.
