Blinds Buying Guide: Measuring, Fitting and Choosing the Right Style

Blinds can solve privacy, glare and style problems quickly, but accurate measuring matters. Decide the blind type and fitting position before ordering.

Safety note: Use child-safe blinds and chain safety devices where required. Check for hidden cables or pipes before drilling around windows, and use a stable step ladder.

Choose the blind type

Roller blinds are simple and compact, Venetian blinds control light well, Roman blinds feel softer, and vertical blinds can suit wide patio doors.

Inside or outside the recess

Inside-recess blinds look neat but need accurate measurements and enough depth. Outside-recess blinds can hide uneven reveals and block more light around the edge.

Measure carefully

Measure width and drop in several places because older windows are often not square. Use the smallest recess measurement unless the supplier tells you otherwise.

Before drilling

Hold brackets in position, check handle clearance and test where the blind will roll or stack. Mark holes only once you are happy the blind will work in daily use.
