How to Choose Drill Bits for Walls, Wood and Metal

The right drill bit makes drilling cleaner, safer and less frustrating. The wrong bit can wander, blunt quickly or damage the surface.

Match the bit to the material

Use wood bits for timber, masonry bits for brick or block, and metal bits for metal. Mixed sets are handy, but only if you know which bit is which.

Start with a pilot hole

A smaller pilot hole helps screws drive straight and reduces splitting in wood. It also gives you better control before moving to a larger size.

Use the right speed

Let the bit do the work. Too much pressure creates heat and can blunt the bit faster, especially in metal.

Think about the fixing

When using wall plugs, match the drill size to the plug size and wall material. A loose hole gives a weak fixing.
