The right drill bit makes drilling cleaner, safer and quicker. Match the bit to the material first, then choose the right size, speed and drilling mode.
Safety note: Check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling. Wear eye protection, secure loose material, and stop if the bit overheats, wanders or catches.
Match the bit to the material
- Wood bits: brad point or flat/spade bits help locate clean holes in timber.
- Masonry bits: use with hammer mode for brick and block, or SDS bits for tougher masonry.
- Tile and glass bits: start slowly without hammer action and keep pressure controlled.
- HSS metal bits: drill metal at lower speed with suitable lubrication where needed.
- Driver bits: match the screw head properly to avoid cam-out and damaged fixings.
Useful extras
Countersinks, pilot bits, magnetic holders, depth stops and right-angle adaptors are worth having once you move beyond basic holes.
Replace bits when
- The bit burns timber rather than cutting it.
- Masonry drilling becomes slow and dusty.
- The tip is rounded, chipped or blue from heat.
- Driver bits slip even with the correct screw size.
