Christmas Decoration Planning Guide for a Safer, Tidier Home

A little planning makes seasonal decorating quicker, safer and easier to pack away. Start with where decorations will go, how they will be fixed and how cables will be managed.

Safety note: Keep decorations away from heat sources, candles and overloaded sockets. Use only suitable indoor lights indoors, check damaged cables before use and avoid trailing leads across walkways.

Plan the main zones

Pick the tree position, window displays, mantel areas and table decorations first. Keep walkways, stairs, sockets and heating controls clear so the room still works normally.

Choose fixings that suit the surface

Use removable hooks for painted walls where possible, reusable ties for bannisters and proper clips for windows or frames. Avoid nails in unknown walls unless you have checked for pipes and cables.

Control cable clutter

  • Test lights before fitting them.
  • Keep plugs accessible.
  • Use timers where suitable.
  • Do not join extension leads in a chain.

Pack away properly

Label boxes by room, wrap lights loosely and store delicate items separately. Future-you will be quietly grateful.
