Electric Screwdriver and Impact Driver Buying Guide
Electric screwdrivers, drill drivers and impact drivers all drive screws, but they suit different jobs. Choosing the right one avoids stripped screws, damaged fittings and buying more tool than you need.
Electric screwdriver
Best for flat-pack furniture, hinges, small brackets and light-duty repeat work. It is compact, easy to control and less likely to overdrive small screws.
Drill driver
The everyday DIY all-rounder. It drills holes and drives screws, usually with adjustable clutch settings so you can control torque.
Impact driver
Useful for long screws, decking, framing and tougher fixings. It delivers force in pulses, but can be too aggressive for delicate hardware.
What to buy first
For most homes, start with a good drill driver and a quality bit set. Add a compact screwdriver for furniture work or an impact driver if you regularly drive larger screws into timber.
