Halloween Decorating Without Damaging Walls, Doors or Floors

Seasonal decorations should be fun to put up and easy to remove. The trick is choosing lightweight items, sensible fixings and safer lighting.

Safety note: Keep decorations clear of stairs, walkways, heaters and doors that need to open fully. Use battery LED lights instead of open flames where possible, especially near fabric, paper, children or pets.

Choose low-damage fixings

Removable hooks, reusable ties and lightweight garlands are usually better than nails, pins or tape on painted surfaces. Test adhesive fixings in a discreet spot if the paint is delicate.

Keep the entrance clear

Decorate around the door rather than across the route people need to use. Mats, pumpkins and lanterns should not create trip points.

Lighting choices

Battery lights and LED lanterns keep the look without the fire risk of candles. If using electrical decorations, check the instructions and keep indoor-only items inside.

Pack and reuse

Sort decorations by area and store fixings with the items they belong to. It makes next year faster and stops good decorations being damaged in storage.
