How to Build a Basic Ground-Level Deck
Project Overview
A basic ground-level deck can make a small garden easier to use, but it still needs a level frame, outdoor-rated fixings and proper drainage beneath it. This guide covers the usual order for a simple freestanding domestic deck close to ground level.
Safety Note
Do not build over drains, inspection covers, air bricks or damp proof courses. Raised decks, steps, railings and anything structurally attached to a building may need extra checks. Wear eye protection, gloves and hearing protection when cutting or drilling timber.
Tools and Materials
- Tape measure, pencil, square, spirit level and string line.
- Outdoor-treated joists, boards, posts or supports and exterior fixings.
- Drill/driver, suitable bits, saw, clamps and PPE.
- Weed membrane, compacted hardcore or gravel for drainage.
Step-by-Step Method
- Clear and level the area, then mark the deck footprint.
- Lay membrane and a free-draining base so water cannot sit under the frame.
- Build the outer frame square, checking diagonals before fixing fully.
- Add joists at the spacing recommended for your boards.
- Check the frame for level, support and movement before fitting decking boards.
- Fix boards with consistent gaps and outdoor-rated screws.
- Trim edges, sand sharp corners and check for trip points.
Common Mistakes
Skipping drainage, guessing joist spacing, using the wrong screws, and fixing boards before the frame is square all cause problems later.
When to Get Help
Get help if the deck is raised, load-bearing, attached to masonry, close to a boundary, or needs balustrades, steps or electrics.
