How to Build a Bee Hotel and Wildlife Corner

Project Overview

A small wildlife corner can be useful without taking over the whole garden. A bee hotel works best when it is dry, stable, correctly positioned and surrounded by suitable planting.

Safety Note

Wear eye protection when drilling timber and gloves when handling cut canes or rough wood. Avoid treated timber if it is not suitable for wildlife contact. Place wildlife features where they will not become trip hazards or block paths.

Build Order

1. Choose untreated or wildlife-suitable timber.
2. Cut a simple frame with a sloped roof or sheltered top.
3. Add bamboo canes, drilled timber blocks or hollow stems with clean openings.
4. Fix the hotel securely so it cannot fall.
5. Position it in a sheltered sunny spot away from regular disturbance.
6. Add pollen-rich plants and a shallow water source nearby.
7. Check each season for rot, blocked holes or loose fixings.

Common Mistakes

Deep damp shade, rough splintered holes, loose mounting and no nearby food plants make wildlife features less useful.
