How to Build a Small Garden Shed Without Guesswork

Project Overview

A shed build is much easier when the base is level and every panel is checked before final fixing. Work slowly, keep the frame square and do not force doors to fit a twisted structure.

Safety Note

Shed panels can be heavy and catch the wind. Build in calm weather, use help for lifting, and wear gloves and eye protection. Do not add fixed electrics unless a qualified electrician designs, installs and tests the supply.

Build Order

  1. Check the base is level, square and the correct size.
  2. Lay out parts and fixings before starting.
  3. Position the floor and first corner panels.
  4. Fix walls loosely until the main shell is square.
  5. Add roof panels and weatherproof covering.
  6. Fit doors, hinges, locks and any windows.
  7. Treat exposed timber and check gaps after the first rain.

Common Mistakes

Building on a bad base, tightening every fixing too early, working in windy weather and ignoring door gaps are the usual pain points.
