Carpet samples and underlay near a doorway for a carpet buying guide

How to Choose the Right Carpet for Your Home

Difficulty1/10
ToolsSamples / tape measure / underlay check

Carpet choice is about more than colour. Room use, pile type, underlay, cleaning needs and door thresholds all affect how the carpet feels and how long it lasts.

Safety note: Carpet fitting uses sharp blades, gripper rods and stretching tools. Many rooms are best measured and fitted by a professional, especially stairs, landings and complex joins.

What to compare

  • Pile: twist, loop and Saxony all feel and wear differently.
  • Fibre: wool blends, polypropylene and nylon suit different budgets and cleaning needs.
  • Underlay: affects comfort, warmth, noise and carpet life.
  • Room use: halls and stairs need harder-wearing choices than spare bedrooms.
  • Colour: test samples in daylight and evening light before deciding.

Measure with care

Measure the widest and longest points, include alcoves and doorways, and check whether thresholds need changing where carpet meets hard flooring.
