How to Clean a BBQ Safely After Cooking
Project Overview
A clean BBQ is easier to light, safer to use and less likely to attract pests. The best habit is to clean it once it is cool enough to handle but before grease and food residue harden completely.
Safety Note
Let the BBQ cool fully before deep cleaning. Disconnect gas bottles where appropriate and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Do not use harsh chemicals on cooking surfaces unless they are specifically suitable, and never clean while flames or hot coals remain.
Method
- Remove grills, trays and loose ash or debris once cool.
- Scrape heavy residue into a bin bag.
- Wash removable parts with warm soapy water if suitable.
- Clean drip trays and check for blocked grease paths.
- Check gas hoses, burners or vents visually without dismantling safety-critical parts.
- Dry parts before storing or covering the BBQ.
When to Get Help
If a gas BBQ smells of gas, has damaged hoses, blocked burners or faulty controls, stop using it until it has been checked or repaired correctly.
