How to Clean a Sofa Without Damaging the Fabric

Sofas take daily use, spills and dust, but the wrong cleaning method can leave water marks, faded patches or damaged fabric. Start gently and test before treating the whole sofa.

Safety note: Follow the sofa care label and test any cleaner on a hidden area first. Avoid soaking upholstery, keep liquids away from electrical recliner parts and stop if colours transfer onto the cloth.

Check the care label

Look for the manufacturer care code before cleaning. Some fabrics tolerate water-based cleaning, some need solvent-based products, and some should only be vacuumed or professionally cleaned.

Start with dry cleaning

Vacuum the sofa slowly with an upholstery tool, including seams, cushions and the gap under the seat pads. Use a soft brush for lint and dust rather than scrubbing hard.

Spot clean carefully

  1. Blot fresh spills, do not rub them wider.
  2. Test cleaner on a hidden patch and let it dry fully.
  3. Use a lightly damp cloth, working from the outside of the mark inward.
  4. Blot with a clean dry cloth and allow air movement while it dries.

Refresh the fabric

For general freshening, a fabric-safe upholstery cleaner or gentle steam may help, but moisture control matters. Cushions should be dry before they are used again to prevent odour or mildew.

Keep it easier next time

Rotate cushions, vacuum weekly in busy rooms and deal with marks quickly. Throws can protect high-use seats while still letting the room feel styled.
