How to Felt a Shed Roof Properly

Project Overview

Roof felt protects the shed more than almost any cosmetic finish. Good overlaps, neat edges and secure fixings help stop water tracking under the felt in wind and rain.

Safety Note

Only work from a stable position at safe reachable height. Do not climb onto a weak shed roof. Use gloves when handling felt and a sharp knife, and follow adhesive instructions carefully.

Method

  1. Remove old felt, raised nails and loose debris.
  2. Check the roof boards for rot before covering them.
  3. Measure and cut felt with enough overlap.
  4. Fix the main sheet straight, working from one edge.
  5. Secure edges and overlaps according to the felt instructions.
  6. Fit trims or battens where needed.
  7. Check after rain and re-secure any lifted edges quickly.

Common Mistakes

Small overlaps, loose edges, old rotten boards and working on a damp roof are the biggest leak risks.
