How to Fit an Internal Bi-Fold Door

Internal bi-fold doors are useful for cupboards and tight spaces, but the track, pivots and opening size all need to work together. A smooth fold depends on careful measuring, square hardware and patient adjustment.

Safety noteCheck for hidden pipes and cables before drilling. Door panels can be awkward to hold, so use help if needed and keep fingers clear of folding hinges and pinch points. Follow the kit instructions for trimming limits, pivot positions and required clearances.

Tools

  • Tape measure, pencil and level
  • Drill/driver, pilot bits and screwdriver bits
  • Screwdriver, small spanner or hex key
  • Dust sheet, work light and safety glasses
  • Square or straight edge for checking the opening

Materials

  • Internal bi-fold door kit
  • Top track, pivots, hinges and brackets
  • Suitable screws and wall/frame fixings
  • Primer or paint for any trimmed edges
  • Handle or pull hardware

1. Measure the Opening and Check the Kit

Measure the width, height and squareness of the opening. Check the kit instructions before cutting or fitting anything, because bi-fold kits have minimum clearances and trim limits. Confirm the finished floor level too, especially if flooring is changing.

2. Fit the Track and Pivot Hardware Square

Fix the top track level and fit pivot brackets square to the frame. Small errors here make the doors bind, drift or refuse to close evenly. Drill pilot holes and tighten fixings gradually so the track does not twist.

3. Hang the Panels and Adjust the Fold

Fit the panels into the pivots and track, then check the fold slowly. Adjust height and side clearance until the panels move without rubbing. Keep fingers clear of hinges and pinch points while testing.

4. Fit Handles and Test Daily Use

Fit the handle or pull once the fold is working properly. Open and close the door several times, then check the bottom pivot and track screws again. If the door rubs after a few days, adjust before the hardware wears.
