Electrician if unsure
Only do this if you are competent
Changing a light fitting can look simple, but ceiling roses may contain looped live wiring, mixed cable colours or poor historic work.
Before touching anything
- Isolate the circuit and prove it is dead with a suitable tester.
- Photograph existing wiring before disconnecting.
- Check the new fitting weight and fixing method.
- Do not guess where multiple cables are present.
- Stop if you find damaged insulation, heat marks or unclear wiring.
Safety note
If you are not competent and confident, use a qualified electrician. New circuits, testing and unsafe wiring are not DIY jobs.
