Measure twice, cut the right joint

Skirting looks simple until walls, floors and corners are out of square. Good results come from careful measuring, sensible joints and secure fixing.

Steps

1. Remove old trim carefully and check wall condition.
2. Mark stud, cable and pipe risk areas before drilling.
3. Use mitres, scribes or coped joints depending on corners.
4. Dry fit before adhesive or mechanical fixings.
5. Caulk small top gaps and fill fixing holes before painting.

Safety note

Use a detector before drilling. Be especially careful near sockets, radiators and pipe boxing.
