How to Grow Herbs in Pots and Small Spaces
Project Overview
Herbs are one of the easiest ways to start growing at home because they fit on windowsills, patios, balconies and small raised beds. The key is choosing the right pot, drainage and position for each herb.
Safety Note
Use clean compost and containers for edible plants. Wash herbs before eating, keep compost and plant feeds away from children and pets, and check that decorative containers have not held chemicals before reusing them for food growing.
What You Need
- Pots or troughs with drainage holes
- Multipurpose or herb compost
- Small trowel and watering can
- Herb plants or seed packets
- Plant labels if you are sowing several types
Method
- Pick a bright position, but avoid a spot that bakes delicate herbs dry all day.
- Fill containers with compost and leave a watering gap at the top.
- Plant woody herbs such as rosemary and thyme in freer-draining pots.
- Keep mint in its own container because it spreads aggressively.
- Water lightly but regularly, then trim little and often to encourage fresh growth.
Common Mistakes
The biggest mistakes are no drainage, overcrowding, and treating all herbs the same. Basil likes warmth and regular water; rosemary and thyme prefer sharper drainage and less fuss.
