Project Overview
Potatoes are satisfying to grow because containers make the process simple and tidy. The basics are seed potatoes, enough compost depth, regular watering and building up soil around the shoots.
Safety Note
Do not eat green potatoes or potato leaves. Store seed potatoes away from children and pets, and wash harvested potatoes before cooking.
What You Need
- Seed potatoes
- Grow bags, large pots or a bed
- Multipurpose compost
- Trowel and watering can
- Gloves
Method
- Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright place until short shoots form.
- Add compost to the bottom of a bag or pot and place seed potatoes shoots-up.
- Cover with compost and water in.
- As shoots grow, add more compost to earth them up.
- Keep evenly watered, especially once plants are leafy.
- Harvest when the variety is ready and foliage starts to fade.
Common Mistakes
Letting bags dry out reduces yield. Too little compost depth exposes potatoes to light and can turn them green.
