Salad leaves growing in containers and a raised bed for a HIP Toolbox guide

How to Grow Salad Leaves in Containers

Difficulty 2/10
Time Ongoing
Tools shallow trays compost watering can scissors

Project Overview

Salad leaves are one of the fastest edible crops for beginners. They grow in shallow containers, can be sown little and often, and do not need a large garden.

Safety Note

Use clean containers and compost for edible crops. Wash leaves before eating and avoid harvesting leaves that have been splashed by dirty water or chemicals.

What You Need

  • Salad leaf seed mix
  • Shallow trays, troughs or a raised bed
  • Compost
  • Fine-rose watering can
  • Scissors for harvesting

Method

  1. Fill a shallow container with compost and firm lightly.
  2. Sow seed thinly across the surface or in short rows.
  3. Cover lightly and water gently.
  4. Keep moist but not soaked.
  5. Harvest outer leaves with scissors and sow again every few weeks.

Common Mistakes

Thick sowing causes weak growth. Containers left in hot sun can dry out quickly and make leaves bitter.
