Sweet potatoes growing in pots with cloche protection for a HIP Toolbox guide

How to Grow Sweet Potatoes in the UK

Difficulty 7/10
Time Seasonal
Tools large pots cloche fleece compost

Project Overview

Sweet potatoes need more heat than ordinary potatoes, so UK growers should think in terms of slips, black pots, warm compost, shelter and a long growing window. Containers can work well because they warm up faster.

Safety Note

Use clean compost and containers for edible crops. Do not eat ornamental sweet potato vines unless the variety is sold for food use, and lift heavy containers carefully.

What You Need

  • Sweet potato slips
  • Large black pots or a warm raised bed
  • Rich compost
  • Fleece, cloche or mini tunnel
  • Watering can and mulch

Method

  1. Plant slips only once nights are warm and frost has passed.
  2. Choose the warmest sheltered spot you have.
  3. Use large pots or deep loose soil so tubers can form.
  4. Keep plants evenly watered but not waterlogged.
  5. Use fleece or a cloche early in the season if conditions are cool.
  6. Harvest before cold wet weather damages the crop.

Common Mistakes

Cold soil, late planting and shallow containers are the usual reasons for disappointing crops. Sweet potatoes need warmth for both leaves and roots.
