How to Install a Bathroom Vanity Unit

A vanity unit has to look neat, support the basin, hide pipework and stay secure in a damp room. Spend time on position and fixings before you connect anything permanent.

Before You Start

  • Check the unit dimensions against the room.
  • Confirm where hot, cold and waste pipes enter.
  • Locate wall studs or choose fixings suitable for the wall type.
  • Check skirting, tiles and pipework do not stop the unit sitting correctly.

Step 1: Mark The Position

Place the unit where it will sit and mark the outline lightly. Check door and drawer clearance, then confirm the basin will line up with the waste and tap supplies.

Step 2: Cut Pipe Access If Needed

Some units need holes or notches cut for pipework. Measure carefully and cut neat access openings. Keep structural parts of the unit intact wherever possible.

Step 3: Level The Unit

Use adjustable feet or packing pieces to get the unit level side to side and front to back. A level unit helps the basin sit properly and makes doors and drawers behave.

Step 4: Fix It Securely

Use the manufacturer fixing points and fixings suitable for your wall. Masonry, plasterboard, tiled walls and stud walls need different approaches. Do not rely on silicone alone to hold furniture in place.

Step 5: Fit Basin, Tap And Waste

Once the unit is secure, fit the basin top, tap and waste. Connect pipework without twisting flexible hoses or putting strain on the waste trap.

Final Checks

  • Doors and drawers open freely.
  • The basin is sealed at the wall and unit.
  • All pipe joints stay dry during testing.
  • The unit does not move when lightly pulled.
