How to Lay Carpet: Measuring, Underlay, Grippers and Fitting Basics
Carpet fitting can look simple, but a neat, stretched finish needs accurate measuring, sharp cutting and the right tools. This guide explains the basics before you decide whether to DIY or book a fitter.
Measure the room
Measure the longest width and length, allowing extra for trimming and doorways. Patterned carpet needs more allowance for matching.
Prepare the floor
Remove old floor coverings, check boards or subfloor condition and fix squeaks before fitting underlay.
Fit underlay and grippers
Grippers sit around the perimeter with the pins angled toward the wall. Underlay should sit inside the gripper line, taped neatly at joins.
Stretch and trim
A knee kicker and carpet stretcher help avoid ripples. Cut gradually around edges and tuck carefully for a clean finish.
When to use a fitter
Large rooms, stairs, patterned carpet and expensive materials are usually worth professional fitting.
