How to Lay Turf for a Better New Lawn
Difficulty
5/10
Time
Day project
Tools
rake fork board and watering can
Project Overview
Turf gives instant green, but it still needs proper soil preparation and careful watering. The first few weeks decide whether it roots evenly or dries, shrinks and lifts.
Safety Note
Turf rolls are heavier than they look, especially when damp. Lift carefully, wear gloves, and avoid working in extreme heat. Check the area for hidden debris, glass or sharp stones before raking.
Method
- Remove old grass, weeds and stones.
- Loosen and level the soil, then rake to a fine surface.
- Firm the soil gently and correct dips.
- Lay turf from a straight edge with staggered joints.
- Butt edges closely without stretching the turf.
- Use boards to spread your weight as you work.
- Water thoroughly and keep traffic off while it roots.
Common Mistakes
Rushing soil preparation, letting rolls dry out, stretching turf and mowing too early can ruin the finish.
