How to Lay Vinyl Floor Tiles in a Small Room
Vinyl floor tiles can be a practical DIY-friendly option for small rooms, but the finish depends on subfloor prep, layout and careful cutting.
Safety note: Old floor coverings and adhesives can contain hazardous materials. Do not sand or scrape unknown old flooring aggressively; get specialist advice if asbestos is possible.
Prepare the floor
The floor needs to be clean, dry, firm and smooth. Small bumps and dips often show through vinyl tiles.
Dry lay first
Set out tiles from the centre or most visible line and check cut sizes at edges. Avoid tiny slivers if shifting the layout slightly gives a better finish.
Cut carefully
Use a sharp knife and straight edge. Score lightly and make repeat passes rather than forcing the blade.
Finish edges
Use trims, sealant or neat skirting details depending on the room. Follow product instructions around expansion and wet areas.
