How to Make a Simple Window Seat with Storage
A window seat can turn an awkward recess into useful storage and a proper feature. The key is planning the load, access and finish before cutting timber.
Safety note: Check for pipes, cables, radiators and damp around the window before fixing anything. Do not block ventilation, radiator airflow or escape routes. Structural changes, bay window uncertainty or damp problems should be checked by a qualified professional.
Plan the size
Measure the width, depth and height of the recess. A comfortable seat usually needs enough depth for cushions and enough height to sit naturally, but it must also work with window handles, curtains, radiators and sockets.
Choose the storage style
- Open cubbies are simple and easy to build.
- Lift-up lids hide clutter but need strong hinges and finger-safe planning.
- Drawer fronts look tidy but need more accurate carpentry.
- Baskets are a forgiving option for uneven older homes.
Build the base
- Mark the finished outline and check the floor is reasonably level.
- Build a simple frame from battens or sheet material.
- Add vertical dividers so the top is properly supported.
- Fix securely where appropriate, then add the top panel.
- Sand edges, fill visible gaps and finish with paint, varnish or trim.
Finish it well
Use washable cushions if the seat will get daily use. Leave access to any services behind or underneath the seat, and avoid sealing in damp-prone external walls without ventilation.
