A front door takes weather, knocks and daily use, so the prep matters as much as the paint. Give yourself enough dry weather, daylight and drying time before the door needs to close fully.

Safety noteKeep the entrance secure while the door is drying and ventilate if painting indoors. Older paint may contain lead, so avoid dry sanding unknown old coatings and use appropriate precautions if unsure. Do not paint in rain, strong direct heat or when the door cannot be left safely to dry.

Tools

  • Sponge, cloth and cleaning solution
  • Screwdriver, masking tape and dust sheet
  • Sanding block and fine abrasive paper
  • Brush, small roller and paint tray
  • Work light if the entrance is shaded

Materials

  • Exterior door paint suitable for the door material
  • Primer for bare timber or exposed surfaces
  • Filler for small dents if needed
  • Replacement seals or hardware if upgrading
  • Disposable gloves and waste bag

1. Clean, Mask and Remove Hardware Where Sensible

Clean grease, dirt and old polish from the door. Remove hardware if it is simple to refit, or mask it carefully if removing it would risk security or alignment. Mask the frame, threshold and glazing before sanding starts.

2. Sand Failing Paint and Prime Bare Areas

Feather rough paint edges so the new coat does not highlight them. Prime bare timber, exposed edges or repaired areas with the correct primer. Wipe away dust before opening the paint.

3. Paint Panels, Mouldings, Rails and Stiles

Paint mouldings and panels first, then work out to rails and stiles. Use thin coats rather than one heavy coat. Keep an eye on runs around mouldings, letterboxes and lower edges.

4. Let It Cure Before Heavy Use

Respect drying and recoat times. Remove masking before the paint fully hardens, then refit hardware carefully. Avoid slamming or leaning anything against the door until the finish has had time to cure.
