How to Paint Skirting Boards Without Messy Edges

Difficulty 3/10
Time 1-3 hours
Tools Sandpaper / brush / tape / dust sheet

Clean edges come from prep

Skirting boards take knocks, dust and old gloss build-up. Cleaning, keying and careful masking make the final coat look much sharper.

Steps

  1. Clean dust, grease and old polish.
  2. Sand lightly and fill dents.
  3. Protect carpets or flooring with tape and a shield.
  4. Use primer where bare timber or MDF is exposed.
  5. Apply thin coats with the right brush.

Safety note

Older painted trim may contain lead paint. Avoid sanding unknown old paint without proper precautions.
