Project Overview
A good hanging basket is about more than packing in flowers. The liner, compost, plant balance and watering routine decide whether it looks full for weeks or fades quickly.
Safety Note
Hang baskets from fixings that are suitable for the loaded weight after watering. If fixing into masonry, use suitable plugs and screws, and avoid drilling near cables or pipes.
What You Need
- Basket and liner
- Container compost
- Trailing, upright and filler plants
- Slow-release feed if suitable
- Trowel and watering can
Method
- Fit the liner and partly fill with compost.
- Arrange trailing plants around the edge.
- Add upright plants in the centre and fillers between gaps.
- Firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Hang securely and keep watered through warm weather.
Common Mistakes
Small baskets dry out very quickly. Weak brackets or unsuitable fixings can fail once the basket is heavy with water.
