How to Plant Bare-Root Roses

Project Overview

Bare-root roses are planted while dormant and can establish strongly if the roots are soaked, the hole is wide enough and the plant is set at the correct depth.

Safety Note

Wear gloves for thorns and use care with spades and forks. If you are digging near paths, lighting or irrigation, check for hidden cables or pipework first.

What You Need

  • Bare-root rose
  • Bucket of water
  • Spade or fork
  • Compost or soil improver
  • Gloves and mulch

Method

  1. Soak roots before planting if they look dry.
  2. Dig a wide hole so roots can spread naturally.
  3. Improve poor soil, but avoid burying the plant in pure compost.
  4. Set the graft union at the recommended level for the rose type.
  5. Backfill, firm gently, water well and mulch.

Common Mistakes

Cramming roots into a small hole slows establishment. Letting roots dry out before planting can stress the plant.
