Make the old piece earn its place
Upcycling works best when the wardrobe is solid enough to keep, the surface is prepared properly and the new finish suits the room rather than just covering the old one.
Safety note: Sanding and stripping can create dust and fumes. Ventilate well, wear suitable protection, test older finishes carefully, and anchor tall wardrobes securely to reduce tip-over risk.
Prep before paint
- Remove handles, loose doors and shelves where possible.
- Clean grease, polish and dust from the surface.
- Sand glossy areas so primer can grip.
- Fill dents and damaged corners, then sand smooth.
- Use a suitable primer for melamine, varnish, bare wood or previously painted surfaces.
Upgrade details
Fresh handles, internal lighting, new hinges, wallpapered panels or added trim can make the wardrobe feel intentional rather than simply repainted.
HIP tip: Test the paint system on a hidden area first. Peeling usually starts because the surface was too shiny, dusty or waxy.
