Kitchen Cabinet Basics: What to Fit First and Why

Start level, stay level

Kitchen cabinets only look good if the first units are set accurately. Small errors at the start become obvious once worktops, plinths and doors go on.

Basic order

  1. Check walls, floors, services and appliance spaces.
  2. Mark a level line around the room.
  3. Fit corner or key base units first, then work outward.
  4. Clamp neighbouring units before fixing them together.
  5. Check square, level and plumb before adding doors or worktops.

Safety note

Use a cable and pipe detector before drilling. Do not move gas, electrical circuits or hidden pipework unless qualified.
