Kitchen Sink Buying Guide: Size, Material and Fitting Type

Difficulty 2/10
Tools Tape measure / cabinet size / samples

Start with the cabinet, not the sink

A kitchen sink has to fit the base unit, worktop material, tap position, waste route and how you actually wash up. Style comes after those checks.

What to compare

  • Single bowl, one-and-a-half bowl, double bowl or compact sinks.
  • Stainless steel, ceramic, composite and resin materials.
  • Inset, undermount and Belfast-style fitting types.
  • Drainer direction, tap hole location and waste kit access.

Safety note

If pipework needs moving or the worktop needs specialist cutting, use the right installer.
