The safest ladder is the one that suits the height, surface and amount of work. For many decorating and DIY jobs, a stable platform is easier and safer than balancing on a ladder for too long.
Safety note: Falls from height can cause serious injury. Use ladders on firm level ground, keep three points of contact, avoid overreaching, and use a proper platform or professional access equipment where the job is high, long, awkward or outside your confidence.
Types to compare
- Step ladders: useful indoors for quick tasks and low-level decorating.
- Extension ladders: suited to access work, not comfortable working platforms.
- Combination ladders: flexible, but only useful if you understand the setup positions.
- Work platforms: often safer and more comfortable for painting, cutting in and repeated work.
Buying checks
- Check duty rating, maximum load and reach height.
- Look for wide treads, non-slip feet and sturdy locking mechanisms.
- Consider storage length and transport before buying an extension ladder.
- Choose a platform when you need both hands free for longer work.
When not to use a ladder
Do not use a ladder for heavy tools, poor weather, uneven ground, roof work, long-duration overhead work or jobs where you need to lean sideways. Plan safer access instead.
