Most clean-looking DIY work starts with measuring and marking well. A few reliable layout tools make shelves, tiles, flooring, cabinets and pictures much easier to get right.
Safety note: Use a detector before drilling into walls, but do not treat it as a guarantee. If a wall may contain cables, pipes or unknown services, investigate carefully and stop if unsure.
Useful measuring tools
- Tape measure: everyday measuring and room planning.
- Spirit level: shelves, cabinets, pictures and tiling lines.
- Torpedo level: tight spaces and small fittings.
- Combination square: right angles, depth checks and repeat marks.
- Laser level: long layout lines, panelling, tiles and pictures.
- Stud detector: a useful clue for fixing points and hidden services.
Good habits
Mark clearly, measure from a consistent reference edge, and check diagonals when square matters. For visible work, step back and check by eye as well as by tool.
