Measuring and Marking: The Simple Way to Avoid Wonky DIY

Most wonky DIY starts before the drill comes out. Good measuring and marking gives you a clear plan before you make holes, cuts or permanent changes.

Use the same reference point

Measure from one fixed edge or corner instead of swapping sides. This keeps small errors from stacking up.

Mark lightly first

Use pencil or masking tape so you can adjust marks before drilling. Check the spacing twice before committing.

Level the thing, not just the mark

A spirit level helps, but also hold the bracket, shelf or frame in place to confirm how it sits in the real space.

Measure the fixing points

Do not guess from the outside edge of a bracket. Measure the actual hole positions and transfer those to the wall.

A few extra minutes at this stage can save filling, repainting and starting again.
