Measuring, Marking and Levelling: Small Habits for Straighter DIY

Most wonky DIY starts before the drill comes out. A few measuring and marking habits can make shelves, hooks, frames and fittings look much cleaner.

Use the Right Reference Point

Measure from a stable edge, floor, worktop or existing fitting. Do not assume walls, floors or door frames are perfectly straight in older homes.

Mark Lightly and Check Twice

A pencil mark, masking tape and a level give you time to adjust before drilling. Mark the centre point clearly and check the spacing before committing.

Level the Thing That Matters

For picture frames, the visual line matters. For shelves, level and support both matter. Decide what success looks like before making holes.

Keep Measuring Tools Together

Tape measure, pencil, small ruler, level and masking tape deserve a home in your main kit. They are used too often to hide in different drawers.
