Outdoor Christmas Lights Guide: Fixing, Power and Weather Safety
Outdoor lights look great when they are planned around fixing points, weather exposure and safe power, rather than stretched from wherever the nearest plug happens to be.
Plan the route
Sketch the gutter, porch, hedge or window route before fitting anything. Measure the run and allow slack at corners so wires are not pulled tight.
Use the right fixings
Plastic clips, gutter clips and removable outdoor hooks are usually neater than tape or nails. Avoid piercing cables, roof coverings or unknown exterior surfaces.
Work safely at height
- Use a suitable ladder on firm, level ground.
- Do not overreach sideways.
- Avoid windy, icy or wet conditions.
- Get help for high or awkward routes.
Power and checks
Check cable condition, plug ratings and instructions before use. Keep connections off the ground and use timers where suitable so lights are not left running unnecessarily.
