Planer, Sander and Router Buying Guide

Planers, sanders and routers all shape timber, but they do very different jobs. This guide helps you decide which tool fits the project in front of you.

Safety note: These tools create dust, noise and fast-moving cutting or sanding parts. Wear eye, hearing and dust protection, clamp work securely, keep guards in place and disconnect power before changing blades, bits or abrasive sheets.

Planer

A planer removes thin layers from timber to trim doors, level edges or reduce thickness. It is useful, but it can remove too much material quickly if you rush.

Sander

A sander smooths surfaces before finishing. Random orbital sanders are a good general choice for many home projects because they reduce visible sanding marks.

Router

A router cuts profiles, grooves, rebates and decorative edges. It is powerful and versatile, but it needs careful setup, practice cuts and the right bit.

Buying priorities

For decorating and furniture refreshes, buy a good sander first. For trimming timber or doors, consider a planer. For fitted furniture, shelving details or repeat joinery, a router becomes useful once you are confident with setup and control.
