Quick Wall Repair and Touch-Up Tips Before You Paint

Paint shows up more than colour. It also shows bumps, dust, raised filler and rushed prep. A few careful steps before painting can make a small repair look much cleaner.

Clean the area first

Wipe away dust, grease and loose material. Paint and filler stick better to a clean surface, and you will get a smoother finish.

Fill in thin layers

For dents and screw holes, apply filler in controlled layers rather than one heavy blob. Let it dry properly before sanding.

Sand until the edge disappears

The aim is not just to flatten the middle of the repair. Feather the edges so your hand cannot feel where the patch begins.

Mask and protect the area

Use masking tape for neat edges and a dust sheet for the floor. Small repairs are quicker when clean-up is kept under control.

Take your time with prep and the painting part becomes much easier. A smooth patch, clean roller and light coats usually beat trying to hide everything at the end.
