Project Overview

Spring bulbs are planted months before you see the result, but the job is simple and gives strong colour in pots, borders and small front gardens.

Safety Note

Many bulbs, including daffodils and tulips, can be toxic if eaten. Wear gloves, keep bulbs away from children and pets, and wash hands after planting.

What You Need

  • Spring bulbs
  • Bulb planter or trowel
  • Pots, compost or a prepared border
  • Gloves
  • Grit for drainage if using containers

Method

  1. Check each bulb type for planting depth and spacing.
  2. Plant pointed end up where visible.
  3. Use deeper pots or layered planting for a fuller display.
  4. Water after planting, then avoid letting containers dry completely.
  5. Leave foliage to die back naturally after flowering.

Common Mistakes

Planting too shallow can lead to weak flowering. Cutting foliage too early reduces next year's display.
