A useful home toolkit should solve common jobs without becoming a drawer full of duplicates. Start with measuring, tightening, gripping, cutting and basic fixings, then upgrade as your projects become more specific.
Safety note: Even hand tools can injure you if they slip, snap or are used on the wrong material. Keep blades sharp, use eye protection when striking or cutting, and secure the work before applying force.
Buy first
- Tape measure, pencil and medium spirit level.
- Claw hammer and utility knife with spare blades.
- Good screwdrivers or a bit driver set.
- Combination pliers, long-nose pliers and adjustable spanner.
- Basic socket set and Allen keys.
- Small clamps and a mixed fixing organiser.
Upgrade later
Add specialist saws, chisels, files, clamps, levels, squares and better storage once you know the jobs you repeat. Buying every tool at the start usually creates clutter rather than capability.
Storage matters
Keep a small everyday kit easy to reach, then separate decorating, plumbing, electrical testing and garden tools into their own boxes as the collection grows.
