Tile Patterns Guide: Straight Lay, Brick Bond, Herringbone and More
Tile pattern changes the feel of a room and the difficulty of the job. A dry layout helps you spot awkward cuts before adhesive is involved.
Safety note: Cutting tiles creates sharp edges and dust. Wear eye protection, gloves and respiratory protection where needed, and use tools according to their instructions.
Straight lay
The simplest option and often the cleanest. It works well with large tiles and modern rooms.
Brick bond
Brick bond adds movement, but large-format tiles may have lippage limits. Check the tile maker’s advice before offsetting too far.
Herringbone
Herringbone looks high-impact but creates more cuts and waste. It rewards careful setting out.
Plan focal points
Centre patterns on visible areas, not hidden corners. Doorways, bath edges, splashbacks and fireplace walls usually matter most.
