Different saws are good at different cuts. Choosing the right one gives cleaner edges, less effort and fewer mistakes.
Safety note: Clamp work securely, keep hands clear of the cut line, wear eye protection and follow tool instructions. Use dust control when cutting sheet material, MDF or treated timber.
Common saw types
- Hand saw: general timber cuts.
- Tenon saw: straighter, finer cuts in trim and joinery.
- Hacksaw: metal, plastic pipe and small hardware cuts.
- Jigsaw: curves, cut-outs and awkward shapes.
- Circular saw: long straight cuts in sheet material and timber.
- Pull saw: fine trim cuts with good control.
Buying advice
Buy for the material you cut most often, then add specialist saws as projects demand them. A good blade matters as much as the saw body.
