Wall Plugs and Anchors: Choosing the Right Fixing

A strong fixing starts with the wall. Plasterboard, brick, block and timber all need different approaches, so do not treat every wall plug the same.

Identify the wall

Tap, inspect and drill carefully. A hollow wall behaves differently from solid masonry, and the fixing must suit the structure behind the surface.

Match the load

Light frames and cable clips need less support than shelves, mirrors or cabinets. Choose fixings based on the real weight and use.

Drill cleanly

Use the correct bit size and keep the hole straight. A messy oversized hole gives the plug less material to grip.

Do not ignore movement

If a fixing moves when pulled gently, stop and improve it before hanging anything important.

The right fixing is quiet confidence: once fitted, the item should feel stable, not hopeful.
