Small home toolbox with essential hand tools

What to Keep in a Small Home Toolbox

A small home toolbox should help with the jobs that actually happen: tightening, measuring, hanging, assembling and making simple repairs. The best kit is compact, easy to find and built around repeated use.

Start with measuring

Keep a tape measure, pencil and small spirit level together. These three stop many jobs from becoming crooked or guessy.

Add fastening tools

A mixed screwdriver set, pliers and an adjustable wrench cover handles, brackets, flat-pack furniture and loose fittings.

Keep useful fixings

A small organiser of screws, wall plugs and washers saves time. Separate them by type so you are not tipping everything out mid-job.

Include a light

A compact LED light is useful under sinks, inside cupboards and around dark corners. You will use it more than expected.

Build slowly. A tidy, reliable core kit is better than a heavy box full of tools you never reach for.
