Project Guide: Putting Up a Retractable Awning
A retractable awning looks like a simple wall-mounted accessory, but it acts like a lever on the wall. The brackets take the weight of the cassette, the pull of the arms and extra load from wind. The fixing method matters, especially on older brickwork or single-storey extensions.

1. Check the wall before buying

Start with the wall, not the awning. Check the height available above doors, the projection you want, where brackets need to land and whether the brickwork can actually take the load.
- Check for loose render, cracked brick, blown faces, soft mortar, damp damage and previous holes.
- Avoid fixing into fascia boards, cladding, loose render, hollow areas or narrow brick edges.
- Check for lintels, cavity construction, insulation, pipes, cables and any structural movement.
- Check boundaries, projection, height and local restrictions before buying a large awning.
2. Choose fixings for the wall, not the packet
Many awnings ship with generic heavy fixings. That does not mean they are right for your wall. On older brick, expansion bolts can put sideways force into the brick and crack or loosen it. Resin-fixed threaded rod is often a better route when the substrate is sound and the system is installed correctly.
- Use the awning manufacturer's bracket positions and minimum fixing requirements.
- Use resin anchors and threaded rod only with the correct hole size, embedment and cure time.
- For hollow or lightweight masonry, use a system designed for that material or get specialist advice.
- Do not mix random bolts, sleeves and brackets without checking compatibility.
3. Drill, clean and resin the holes properly

The drilling and cleaning stage decides whether the resin bond is strong or dusty and unreliable. Drill square, clean thoroughly and keep the rods undisturbed while the resin cures.
- Mark everything with a long level before drilling the first hole.
- Clean each hole with brush and blow cycles, not just a quick puff of air.
- Inject resin from the back of the hole and twist the threaded rod in slowly.
- Do not tighten brackets until the resin has fully cured for the wall temperature.
4. Use spreader brackets where the load needs spreading

On single-storey extensions, lower brickwork, older masonry or awkward bracket spacing, a spreader bracket or plate can help distribute the load across more fixings. It is not a cure for a weak wall, but it can be the difference between a sensible installation and point-loading a few bricks.
- Use a spreader plate/bracket sized for the awning and wall type.
- Make sure the plate is fixed into sound material, not only into mortar joints.
- Keep brackets level so the cassette lifts on evenly.
- Do not use timber outside unless it is suitable, sealed and maintained, or use a proper metal spreader system.
5. Lift, test and use it carefully
Awnings are awkward to lift and easy to damage. Use enough help, support the cassette, follow the manufacturer's locking sequence and test the mechanism slowly before fully extending it.
- Check all brackets are seated before letting go of the weight.
- Open the awning gradually and listen for binding, creaking or bracket movement.
- Retract it in wind, heavy rain or when you are away from home.
- Check fixings seasonally, especially after storms or if the awning starts moving differently.
